1. Inter-Faculty and Cross-Disciplinary Steering Committees applications for funds

A reminder that applications to establish Inter-Faculty and Cross-Disciplinary Steering Committees in 2008 are due by Friday 2 November. Staff should submit proposals to the Office of the Provost. Six grants of up to $40,000 each are available.

2. Australian Corporate Games - University of Melbourne Team

Staff are invited to participate in the Australian Corporate Games, to be held in Melbourne 23-25 November, as part of the University of Melbourne team.

The Australian Corporate Games feature 10,000 participants from 300 organisations with team size ranging from 1-400 members and are open to all. Family, friends and clients of staff are welcome to joint the University of Melbourne Team, there are individual and team events and there are individual medals and corporate awards.

There are many sports in which staff can participate – AFL football, badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, cricket eights, golf, indoor karting, netball, outrigger, poker, running, soccer, soccer sixes, softball, squash, swimming, table tennis, tennis, tenpin bowling, touch football and volleyball.

Anyone interested in participating in any of these individual or team sports as part of the University of Melbourne Team should contact either Lisa Ng (Information Services EHS Coordinator & MUSA Secretary) or Rod Warnecke (Sports Development Manager, MU Sport).

3. Red Cross Blood Service on campus

Eligible staff and students are invited to make an appointment to give blood when the Red Cross Blood Service visits the University’s Parkville campus on Wednesday 7-Friday 9 November from 9:30am - 3:30pm. A mobile donating facility will be established in the Grand Buffet Room of the Union Building.

The Blood Service is currently low on O-negative and B-negative type blood.

4. 2007 Vice-Chancellor’s Colloquium on Teaching and Learning

The Vice-Chancellor’s Colloquium will symbolically mark the transition to the Melbourne Model in 2008 on Tuesday 4 December at 8.45am – 3pm in the Melbourne Law School, with a forum on ‘Melbourne 2007 to 2008: Celebrating Inspirational Teaching’.

The Colloquium will be an opportunity for the University community to acknowledge the achievements made during 2007 and to celebrate inspirational teachers and teaching.

All University of Melbourne staff are warmly invited to attend. The Colloquium features a keynote address, a showcase of this year’s University of Melbourne Teaching Award Recipients, recognition of the University’s recipients of national Carrick Awards for Australian University Teaching, parallel sessions featuring development and innovation projects funded through the Learning and Teaching Performance Fund, and the launch of a new DVD ‘Every Voice’, which explores English language issues in higher education.

6. Healthy individuals and healthy patients with type 2 diabetes needed

Dr Glenn McConell and Sophie Yeo at the Department of Physiology are conducting a study to determine if a single bout of exercise activates skeletal muscle mitochondrial biogenesis and GLUT4 expression normally in people with type 2 diabetes.

Both healthy individuals, and healthy patients with type 2 diabetes aged 35 to 60 who do not currently partake in endurance exercise training are needed to participate in the study.

The study involves pre-participation screening, cycling exercise on a stationary ergometer, blood tests, and muscle and fat sampling by needle biopsy.

7. First Aid Training

Classes are only half full for forthcoming First Aid Certificate, and CPR skills training in the level 7 Conference room, Physics Buildings.

Level 1, Level 2 and CPR Refresher training:
* Thursday 29 November (level 1 and Day 1 for Level 2) and Friday 30 November (Day 2 for Level 2 only).
* Tuesday 4 December (level 1 and Day 1 for Level 2) and Tuesday 11 December (Day 2 for Level 2 only)

Staff must ensure they have approval from their Department to attend. Departments will be billed directly through First Aid Management and Training.

8. Meet your EHS Adviser at a lunch to celebrate WorkSafe Safety Week

Next week, 22-26 October, is official WorkSafe Safety Week, and the Environment, Health and Safety Unit is celebrating with a lunch on Wednesday 24 October at 1pm in the Gryphon Gallery, 1888 Building.

All staff are welcome, and RSVP is not required.

This is a great opportunity to meet and mingle with key EHS contacts from across the University. EHS Advisers from the EHS Unit will be in attendance, as will newly appointed Faculty EHS Managers for Engineering, Veterinary Science and Property and Campus Services.

9. Bullwinkle’s art and stationery store moving to Union House

Bullwinkle's art and stationery store wishes to notify all staff that they will be relocating to Union House, near North Court. Access will be off North Court on the east (theatre) wing.

The store will also be known in future as the Workshop Art and Stationery Store. The redevelopment of the Frank Tate Building as part of the new Eastern Precinct Learning Hub has made our move necessary.

10. Latest episode of Visions

Visions is speeding rapidly towards the finish line of its first season, and so turns its attention to the hard working group of Engineering students who make up the Formula SAE racing team at the University.

The final competition may not be until December, but the 30-man team is hard at work testing and re-testing the car before pitting it against university race teams across the world. The second story looks at a University program helping young people living with mental illness find jobs.

11. Academic Women in Leadership Program 2007-2008 - Invitation to Apply

The Academic Women in Leadership Program (AWiL) commenced in 1997-98 and since that time 65 women have participated in the program. The program has been well received by all past participants as significantly contributing to their knowledge and skills in leadership, and leading to greater career and personal development opportunities. Each year the program is reviewed and refined based on feedback from participants.

Human Resources will offer the Academic Women in Leadership Program again in 2007-2008 with the greater part of the time commitment in early to mid 2008.

The program is open to all level C and D academic women.

12. Healthy older adults with normal vision needed for study

People aged between 58 and 75 years who have normal vision (either with or without glasses) and have no health problems known to affect vision are required as a control group for a research project assessing vision loss due to glaucoma. Participants will complete computerized vision tests that require watching a computer screen and pressing a button to indicate what they can see. Volunteers will be asked to attend the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences, University of Melbourne, for up to 2 test visits of 1-2 hours in duration.

14. Soft contact lens wearers needed

Clinical Vision Research Australia (CVRA) at the Victorian College of Optometry is conducting a research project to evaluate the clinical performance of an antimicrobial contact lens.

Anyone who is a current soft contact lens wearer, aged 18-45 years, and is interested in participating in this study is invited to telephone 9349 7410 and ask for information regarding the SALSA 2 study or email: cvra@optometry.unimelb.edu.au.

Researchers will need participants’ permission to consult with their current eyecare practitioner.

15. Explore a new career in Urban Planning or Landscape Architecture

Staff are advised that graduate level study in Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture may be an excellent change of career option.

The Master of Urban Planning & the Master of Landscape Architecture is open to students who have completed ANY degree. From 2008 Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) will be offered in these two programs, and students from a wide range of backgrounds and previous degree studies are being sought. These Graduate Professional Masters Programs are highly career-focused and lead to accreditation.

Anyone completing degree studies this year, or who is considering a change in direction or looking for further career options, is invited to attend the Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture Graduate Information Session on Wednesday 24 October at 5–7pm in the Prince Philip Theatre, Architecture and Planning Building.

16. The University of Melbourne 2008 Calendar- Creation Tracks and Trade Winds

The Ian Potter Museum of Art announces that the University of Melbourne 2008 calendar, Creation Tracks and Trade Winds, has arrived at the Potter and they are now taking orders.

The 2008 calendar celebrates the success of the Creation tracks and trade winds exhibition and is a further opportunity to increase national and international audiences’ awareness of the cultural and historical importance of these striking works of art.

Copies of the calendar can be purchased for $22 at the Potter Information Desk or by mail for an additional $5 postage & handling.

17. EOWA Employer of Choice for Women

The annual EOWA Employer of Choice for Women citation publicly acknowledges organisations for their efforts in the area of equal opportunity for women in the workplace.

The University has been a recipient of this prestigious award since 2002 and the Equal Opportunity Unit is currently preparing an application for renewal of the award in 2008.

18. Supervisor workshop – PhD examination process

All supervisors of research higher degree students are invited to register for the final School of Graduate Research supervisor workshop for 2007, to be held on Tuesday 23 October, from 12noon – 2pm in the Gryphon Gallery of the Graduate Centre.

The session focuses in detail on all aspects of the PhD examination process, from the selection and appointment of examiners to examination reports, amendments, resubmission and extension processes. Feedback received from examiners about pitfalls in thesis presentation will also be covered.

Associate Professor Gerry Mullins, author of ‘It's a PhD not a Nobel Prize’ will deliver the workshop with Diana Reed from the Examinations Office at SGR.

19. SECURECon 2007 - Open for registration

SECURECon 2007 will run from 7-9 November, and this year's theme is ‘Securing Open Environments’.

Open environments can include open access networks, public web applications and other network services not confined within a corporate LAN.

There will technical and non-technical IT Security talks, and workshops on security auditing using open source security tools and Security Enhanced Linux.

SECURECon aims to provide a forum for high quality presentations and workshops on emerging issues and technologies in IT Security. Aimed at IT professionals across all industries, SECURECon provides an opportunity for IT Professionals to network and exchange ideas and information.

20. Themis Self Service Training – Wednesday 7 November and Friday 9 November

The EA Documentation and Training Services team offers introductory training for Themis Self Service. Two sessions will be offered on Wednesday 7 November and repeated on Friday 9 November will be held in the ITC Labs, Level 1, 780 Elizabeth Street.

The first session provides an introduction to Themis, focussing on the functionality available in Staff Self Service. This is suitable for new staff who have had limited or no exposure to Themis. Scheduled: 10:30am 7 and 9 November.

The second session provides an overview of the Themis Research module, and is suitable for academic staff and research administrators who are not yet familiar with Themis Research. Scheduled: 11:30am 7 and 9 November.
