4. Email scams - a message from IT security services

Staff are advised NOT to respond to emails requesting sensitive information like usernames and passwords. The University will NEVER request sensitive information via email. Be wary of unsolicited emails, specifically those purporting to be from the University, banks or other financial institutions. 5. ALTC competitive grants due

The Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) applications for 2010 competitive grants are due internally on 12 October. Up to $220,000 is available per project. The Centre for the Study of Higher Education and Melbourne Research Office are available to provide feedback. 6. Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

Bio21 Cluster seeks researchers in biomedical fields interested in offering casual positions to undergraduate students through the UROP scheme. Students are employed by the host laboratory full-time for four weeks during the summer vacation and for eight hours per week during semester. Closing date for expressions of interest is the end of September 2009. Students will be available to commence placements during the summer recess. Bio21 Cluster co-ordinates recruitment and selection of students. Funds are not available from Bio21 Cluster to support student positions. 7. Commonwealth Scholarships in the United Kingdom

Commonwealth Scholarships to study in the United Kingdom for the 2010/2011 academic year are now open. These awards support students from Commonwealth countries who wish to undertake full-time doctoral study at specific universities in the United Kingdom. 8. University pool cars available

A fleet of pool cars has been established for staff requiring cars for University business. Bookings can be made online, and the vehicles and keys can be accessed 24/7 from the South Lawn Underground Car Park. 9. Optus telecommunications towers to improve coverage

Optus is expanding its mobile telecommunications network to provide improved service coverage at the Parkville and Southbank campuses. Antennae have been installed at the Student Union and VCAM, and the Block B Engineering building. Coverage in the western precinct at Parkville will be remediated through tower construction at the David Penington Building and Building 400 (Vet Science) by 12 October, and the Chemistry Building antennae will be in operation by mid November. 10. Future Research Leaders Program

The Future Research Leaders Program (FRLP) was designed by the Group of Eight universities to develop the skills and knowledge for successful research leadership. The FRLP comprises 8 modules that explore the principles and effective practice of research leadership. Modules 5-8 will be held in November. Enrolments will open on Thursday 1 October for University of Melbourne academic staff who match the target participant criteria. A4 flyer, DL flyer/invitation templates and poster templates in the new public lecture visual style are available on line for University departments and faculties to use free of charge. The cost of printing will be charged. Printing must be sourced through Publishing Services or DPC. Download a low resolution PDF for email. 13. Centre for the Study of Higher Education Advanced skills seminars for sessional teachers

14. New IP Telephony for the University

The IPTel Project has reached over 1,500 new IP phone migrations across the University, including some regional sites. ‘Voice over Internet Protocol’ uses the University’s computer networks and internet, replacing old and costly copper cable/PABX systems. Users moved across to the new system will enjoy several new features and benefits, significantly improving their voice communications. 17. Mental Health Week events

5 to 9 October. The University is hosting a series of events to mark Mental Health Week. The Provost, Professor John Dewar, will launch the University’s Mental Health Strategy at 1:00pm on Tuesday 6 October in the Level One, Engineering Student Centre Learning Space, Old Engineering Building, followed by a keynote address on “Mental Health and Meaning” by psychiatrist, psychotherapist and traumatologist Dr Paul Valent. 20. First Aid training in November

First Aid Management and Training is offering CPR, First Aid Level 2 and First Aid Level 2 Refresher Training on Monday 9 - Tuesday 10 November and Wednesday 25 -Thursday 26 November in the Level 1 Executive Lounge, Alan Gilbert Building. 21. Volunteers required for vision research

People aged 60-80 years or 18-38 years are required for a research study assessing how normal ageing affects visual performance. Participants must have normal vision (either with or without glasses) and have no health problems known affect vision. A single test session of up to two hours’ duration is involved which includes an abbreviated clinical eye examination and computer based testing of vision. Volunteers will be reimbursed $15 to assist with travel expenses incurred in attending. 22. Volunteers required – walking study

This study investigates walking patterns and stair negotiation in healthy adults. The project team is looking for healthy people who are over 40 years of age and are able to walk freely, climb up and down stairs, rise from a seated position and squat without pain in the knees, hips or lower back. People with current knee pain, hip or back conditions, who are planning leg surgery, or who are unable to walk without help are not eligible.
