The University of Melbourne is the National Gallery of Victoria’s official Learning Partner for the Winter Exhbitions show of Italian Masters, due to open later this week.

The University of Melbourne has partnered with the National Gallery of Victoria as exclusive ‘Learning Partner’ for the forthcoming Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition, Italian Masterpieces from Spain’s Royal Court, Museo del Prado.

‘The partnership will showcase staff and students from the Victorian College of the Arts and Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, on the gallery foyer stage and in the exhibition space, through a program of musical and artistic performances,” explains University of Melbourne Vice-Principal Engagement Adrian Collette.

The University will also conduct a Melbourne Masterclass series at the gallery, hosted through the Faculty of Arts, featuring academic expertise within the faculty and across other disciplines. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Glyn Davis, will present the first masterclass.

The holdings of Italian art in the Museo del Prado, Madrid are unique and unrivalled in museums outside Italy.

Coming to Melbourne for the first time, this exhibition is drawn from the Museo’s magnificent collection of over 70 paintings and 30 drawings presenting a rich selection of works spanning 300 years of Italian art, from the early sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries.

This is the largest number of Italian works the Museo del Prado has ever loaned to one exhibition, which is organised by Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid in association with the National Gallery of Victoria and Art Exhibitions Australia.

Exhibition dates: 16 May – 31 August 2014
