Melbourne’s decision to hold all graduations in December, including Engineering (pictured above) at the Royal Exhibition Building, now ensures international and domestic students graduate together.

In 2010 for the first time, the University offered eligible students the opportunity to graduate at one of the 22 graduation ceremonies, including Engineering at the Royal Exhibition Building, scheduled in December. There was an overwhelmingly positive response to this new end-of-year timeframe, with more than 6000 students electing to graduate at one of the ceremonies.

The University is working on a new approach to the graduation experience, which will convey the importance of the celebration for students, guests and staff. A key change is the integration of local and international cohorts, and the December timeframe is a response to strong student preferences to move graduations closer to the completion of their studies. The December 2010 ceremonies were particularly significant, as they included the first graduating cohort from our Melbourne Model degrees.

The first ceremony was on Friday 3 December with the final one on 22 December. The new program saw changes on campus, including the Graduations Marquee on the Union Lawn, which was the location of the post-ceremony refreshments for students and guests. There were also information tents at key entrances as well as graduations signs and banners throughout campus to welcome and direct the estimated 18,000 visitors during this time.
