Dreaming big with IT

Sam Stewart has turned his lifelong love of computers into a career in problem-solving beginning with a graduate job at PricewaterhouseCoopers as programmer. By Rebecca Scott.

For someone who has a knack for computers, 20-year-old final-year Bachelor of Science student Sam Stewart has found his feet.

“At school and at home I always enjoyed mucking around on computers but I didn’t really think I could make it my career,” he says.

He discovered the problem-solving element to computing while studying Informatics in his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Melbourne.

“I found I absolutely loved it,” he says. “Really good lecturers helped me to see computing as more than just a pastime.”

His knack for programming will stand him in good stead when he starts a graduate job at PricewaterhouseCoopers as a programmer.

“I got involved in the Melbourne University IT student society which has a great connection to industry. I did a summer internship with PricewaterhouseCoopers and it really opened some doors,” he says.

Mr Stewart will be working in the field of information security, in security-based assessment and the field known as ethical hacking.

“It’s great because I will be working with a range of clients. I love the idea of working where you have to stay on the cutting-edge.

 “I think it is a really stable future in terms of career options as there is such a massive scope in the field. I will be able to sample all of this during my scholarship.

“Studying IT at Melbourne has opened up my mind to career options in IT and into an exciting industry.”
