Werribee Veterinary Science Hospital Open Day

Volume 8 Number 3 March 12 - April 8 2012

Sunday 25 March is Open Day at the Faculty of Veterinary Science’s Hospital at Werribee. Prospective vets and anyone interested in state-of-the-art care of animals is invited to pay a visit to learn about the way vets care for animals, big and small.

A series of public lectures will provide opportunities to hear about the latest news and discoveries in animal health. Veterinarians working at the forefront of veterinary science will share experiences from their time spent consulting with patients, teaching the veterinarians of tomorrow and conducting research.

Entertaining pet demonstrations will take place on the Main Lawn throughout the day and a Self-Guided Tour of the Veterinary Hospital will show visitors what goes on behind the scenes, in the operating theatre and prep areas.

Interactive displays throughout the Hospital and in the Cattle Yards will support veterinarians and students in sharing their knowledge. Visitors can learn how problems are identified, pets treated, explore the latest veterinary equipment and be introduced to a range of different veterinary procedures.

Visitors can learn about animal disease from the malformed to the malignant in pathology presentations and displays, including fresh specimens, museum pots (specimens suspended in Perspex) and skeletons.

Melbourne Cup winners Doriemus and Brew from ‘Living Legends’, home to retired racing champions, will be on campus. Doriemus had life-saving colic surgery at the Equine Centre in 2010 and the Living Legends team will be on hand to tell his amazing story.

Prospective students can get course advice from staff veterinarians about the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program. Course advisers from the Faculty of Science and the Melbourne School of Land and Environment and the Office of Admissions will also be available to answer questions.

For the whole family:

FREE face-painting, balloons, badge-making and entry to animal farm

Food stalls, including a sausage sizzle supporting veterinary students and the local Scouts
